‘Loss’ is a self portrait study in charcoal and white pencil expressing a moment of sadness after the loss of my mother who was a very significant person in my life. The photos for this piece were taken a couple of months after the loss and were my first attempt at creating a composition again afterwards. The image for ‘Introspection’  was taken on the same day and there is an atmosphere of sadness in these two self portraits. I find art not only a means to observe and express others experiences but to express my own feelings no matter how raw.

Marianne
2014
Pastel and Pastel Pencil on Paper
45cm x 60cm

‘Marianne’ a portrait of my sister reflects my interest in classical realism and in my practice of painting those closest to me. The expression and tilt of the head has been influenced by drawings I admire from the Renaissance period such as Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings of women.

John
2011
Charcoal and Pencil on Paper
37cm x 55cm
The piece ‘John’ a portrait of my father, has a great emphasis on capturing the effects of light upon aging skin, sketchy lines loosely applied became an intricate web of wrinkles as the piece became fully rendered. The expression in this piece was the major aspect I wanted to hang the portraits content on. Through vague lines and obscuring certain expression lines I aimed to create an expression that was enigmatic and open to interpretation and that drew the viewers attention.
