Since becoming a mother I have always wanted to create a mother and child painting. Having seen so many paintings depicting this theme throughout art history I wanted to create my own version. Inspired by the self portraits with her daughter of Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, I wanted to create my own version with my daughter. The title Love expresses what being a mother is to me. My arms around my daughter expresses a mothers wish to protect her child. Choosing a slightly uncertain gaze for my daughter, that could be open to interpretation, also added more to the story and sense of a mothers protection. The painting was created in layers, refined details added in final layers.
